Ability that Paul said about: Contentment and Humility 바울이 말한 능력: 자족과 겸손

Paul professed about what he have learned when Philippians was trying to help him financially. Paul said that he learned to be content with any circumstances and so he was not affected by his having or meals that he needed. However, he applauded Philippians’ financial help for him, for he thought that they participated in his hardship. This phrase belongs to the passage, Phi.4:10-14, that is about Paul’s self-sufficiency and so his humility in Christ. When he said he could do everything in Christ, he would have meant that he could be well fed or hungry and have plenty or be in need, though we might read this phrase literally as the ability of “achievement” or “success.” This phrase is about nothing more than humbling himself as Christ Jesus has done.

빌립보 교회의 성도들이 바울을 돕는 상황에서 바울이 고백한다. 바울은 자신이 자족하는 것을 깨우쳤고 비천과 풍부에 달관한 생활을 할 수 있다고 밝힌다. 그러나 빌립보 교회가 자신을 돕는 것은 자기가 처한 고난에 동참하는 것이므로 칭찬받아야 한다고 말한다. 빌립보서 4장 13절은 바울이 자족하는 삶의 비결을 이야기하다가 나온 말이다. 모든 것을 할 수 있다는 것은 우리가 흔히 이 구절을 문자적으로 읽을 때 “성취”와 “성공”의 능력을 뜻하는 것으로 오해할 수 있으나 오히려 그러한 뜻과는 대별되는 “자족”과 “겸손”의 능력을 의미한다. 바울은 그리스도 예수 안에서 자족할 수 있다고 말하고 있다.
